So, let's chat about this simple salmon burger recipe then. I cannot believe how good they are. They're so full of herby flavour and they are so perfectly simple.
As much as I love a classic beef burger I think these might actually be even more delicious. I love to keep canned salmon on hand so I can throw I fried them in a pan for just a few minutes on either side but you could also cook them on a grill if you prefer.
Then we popped the salmon patties in buns and added some delicious toppings and they made an ideal quick and easy weeknight dinner.
Why we love this recipe...
- They're so insanely easy thanks to the fact that they use canned salmon (or leftover cooked salmon if you prefer) plus a handful of other ingredients
- They're served with a super simple but flavourful garlic yoghurt sauce
- If you prefer a different fish then you could use pretty much anything else you like which makes them great for using up any leftover fish
- These burgers are also healthy with just a few ingredients needed
Ingredients
This section is here to provide further tips and ideas for alternative ingredients. The full recipe and instructions are included in the recipe card at the bottom of the post!

- Eggs
- Panko Breadcrumbs: Use leftovers for this halloumi sandwich
- Garlic
- Fresh Dill & Parsley: If you prefer other herbs then feel free to mix it up! Use any extras in the dressing for this caprese pasta salad

Make Ahead
You can prepare these burgers ahead of time by making the mix and shaping them then putting them on a plate and covering. Store them in the fridge until ready to cook.
Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. When ready to eat you can gently reheat in a frying pan for a few minutes until warmed through.
Variations
Try adding a drizzle of chilli oil before serving for a hint of spice.
If you don't fancy a full burger then these patties are still delicious served over a salad, with a side of roasted potatoes or broken up in a wrap.
If you want to make this recipe gluten free then simple switch the panko for gluten-free breadcrumbs.
Salmon Burgers FAQ
You can freeze them for up to 2 months. Wrap in cling film or put in an airtight container and store in the freezer. Defrost before using.
They are pretty healthy. Salmon is full of healthy fats and vitamins and they're so light and fresh!
What's great about these burgers is that they take just 15 minutes from start to finish. They cook in a hot pan for 5 minutes on each side just to get them browned and crispy since the salmon is already cooked through.
I like to make sure these burgers are served with an amazing sauce like the garlic yoghurt in the recipe but they would also be great with mayonnaise and other classic toppings like lettuce, sliced tomatoes or red onion. They're also really good served with a classic side like fries or even a salad.
Absolutely! You can use leftover cooked salmon or fry or bake salmon fillets especially for it. I would recommend putting the salmon in a food processor and pulsing a couple of times to chop before proceeding with the recipe as written.
I love these burgers served in brioche buns for a touch of sweetness to compliment the salty and citrus flavours but they would be just as good served in a regular burger bun or even in a lettuce wrap!
The egg is key in this recipe for helping the burgers to stick together. If you're still having issues with the burgers falling apart because of lack of moisture then you can add an extra squeeze of lemon juice or even a splash of water. If they're too wet then add a little more panko.
This is totally up to you! While a lot of people subscribe to the opinion that cheese and fish don't work together, I tend to believe that cheese works with most things and I'm sure that these burgers are included!
Again, this totally depends on your preference. While I tend to prefer something a little creamier on these burgers, if ketchup is your preference then go for it.
There are a few different options. Try crushing crisps (potato chips) or crackers and adding to the mixture. Finely chopped nuts or even oats also work in place of breadcrumbs.

Lovely!! I used only half the amount of egg and breadcrumbs. I added a chopped spring onion and some capers. Before frying I turned the patties in some panko for a crust. Fabulous lunch with some frozen peas briefly cooked and ligthly mashed with salt, pepper and chopped mint. I am certain I will be having these again. Thank you so much!

Sounds delicious, thanks Afra!

Do you drain the salmon before adding other ingredients?
Amy says
Hi Reeva, yes you need to drain the salmon first, sorry not to have made that clear!
